Even as the number of women in STEM fields continues to grow, many find it hard to cover the cost of a STEM education. That’s where scholarships designed for women in STEM come in.
These scholarships can help minimize the cost of college and help female students pursue their dreams. Read below for the best STEM scholarships for female college students.
1. Wired Engineering Scholarship
The Wired Engineering Scholarship provides scholarships to BIPOC high school students who plan to major in engineering or a related major. Students will have to submit an essay, between 400 and 600 words, about how they hope to create a positive impact in the world during their engineering career.
There will be five winners, each of whom will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The application deadline is November 1, 2022, and winners will be announced on November 30, 2022.
2. BHW Scholarship
Female students in a STEM-related major are eligible for the BHW Scholarship, worth $3,000. The next round will be open in January, and applications are due April 15, 2023.
High school seniors, undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate students are eligible. International students are eligible to apply but must attend a US-based school.
To apply, students have to write a 500-800 word essay on their favorite app or a time when an app has significantly improved their life.
3. Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship
The Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a woman studying engineering, math, biological sciences, or physical sciences. The winner will receive a $4,000 scholarship.
International students are eligible to apply. Only full-time students pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college will qualify.
Students must complete the application form, answer basic questions about their career goals and write a 500 to 1,000-word essay on one of five preselected topics.
The Heinlein Society also provides three other scholarship opportunities for candidates of any gender, each also worth $4,000.
4. Lockheed Martin STEM Scholarship
Defense contractor Lockheed Martin offers $10,000 scholarships to 200 recipients who are majoring in engineering or computer science at a four-year college. Students may renew the award and receive a total of $40,000. Recipients may also receive an internship at Lockheed Martin, but that is not guaranteed.
While this scholarship is open to all genders, preference will be given to applicants that are members of groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM. Almost half of the 2021 winners were women.
Only U.S. citizens are eligible, and students must also have demonstrated financial need to qualify. There is a 2.5 GPA requirement. Students must be attending or plan to attend college full-time; part-time students are not eligible. The next round of scholarships will be open in January 2023.
5. Young Women in STEM Scholarship
The Young Women in STEM Scholarship selects three winners who will each receive $10,000. High school seniors and undergraduate students are eligible.
Students must have demonstrated financial need to qualify. Applicants will need to answer three essay questions, and each response should be about 250 words.
6. Society of Women Engineers Scholarship
Female-identifying students who are majoring in engineering, computing, or technology can apply for this Society of Women Engineers Scholarship. In 2021, the organization awarded 290 scholarships to both new and previous winners worth more than $1,220,000 total.
Community college, undergraduate, and graduate students are all eligible. Part-time students may qualify for this award, but only if they are non-traditional students or those returning to school.
Students must be attending or planning to attend an ABET-accredited school, which you can find here.
7. The Science Ambassador Scholarship
Sponsored by Cards Against Humanity, the Science Ambassador Scholarship offers a full-ride scholarship to a female student in a STEM-related major. There will be one grand prize winner with four runners-up, receiving scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
The application requires that students submit a video that is three minutes or less where they explain a STEM-related topic they’re passionate about. The video should be more of a lecture, not a personal statement. The video must be publicly uploaded to YouTube. The next round of applications will be open in the fall of 2022.
International students can apply, but all students must attend a U.S.-based college to qualify. Only undergraduate students or current high school seniors can apply.
8. Women at Microsoft Scholarship
The Women at Microsoft Scholarship awards female and non-binary students who are interested in a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) fields.
Students must have a 3.0 GPA and plan to attend a two or four-year accredited school in the U.S. or a U.S.-affiliated program. Only high school seniors are eligible to apply. International students can apply for this program.
The maximum amount awarded is $5,000. Scholarships may be renewed for four years total. Students will need to submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay about their passion for technology and what kind of STEAM career they hope to have.
9. Women in Tech Scholarship
The Women in Tech Scholarship provides a $3,000 scholarship to one winner. To apply, students must write a 400 to 600-word essay about why they want to pursue a STEM career and what they hope to accomplish professionally.
Applicants must be an undergraduate at a two-year or four-year institution.
10. Snapology STEAM Studies Scholarship
Only female students are eligible for the Snapology STEAM Studies Scholarship. To qualify, you must plan to major in a STEAM-related field. Only high school seniors can apply for this award.
One winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship. Students must answer the essay question, “If you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?”
11. Aysen Tunca Memorial Scholarship
The Aysen Tunca Memorial Scholarship is given to a female undergraduate student with a STEM-related major. One $2,000 award will be given.
Only students who are sophomores or juniors in college can apply. Preference will be given to students who have faced some sort of adversity in their life. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents attending school in the U.S. are eligible. They must also be members of the Society of Physics Students.
