Indiegogo staffers are putting crowdfunded products to the test in our new series of honest reviews. In this review, our very own content creator Dane Elliott provides a review of BREAKWATER SUPPLY FOGLAND, a new waterproof backpack that is fully submersible and thoughtfully-designed for outdoor adventure. Does it live up to the hype? Read on as we put it to the test!

I consider myself someone who hikes for the aesthetic, rather than the pleasure of being in nature. This means I’m actively looking for ways to not only feel good while hiking, but look good too!

Because my school backpack is not suited for the outdoors, I’ve always hiked with a drawstring bag. This meant I couldn’t carry everything I wanted to bring, and I’d have to pick and choose what came with me and what stayed at home.

This led me on a hunt for a backpack that would grant me the stylish look I desperately sought while also maintaining functionality. Yet, most hiking backpacks on the market compromise style for functionality. So when I found a bag like Fogland Backpack that gave me both, I was immediately intrigued.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Upon opening the backpack, I was struck by the inside space! I could fit multiple outfits, a pair of shoes, and even a water bottle inside — perfect for long hikes! Even when the backpack is full, it is still visually appealing, and doesn’t look to be bursting at the seams.

Review: The Submersion Test

The Fogland Backpack claims to be 100% waterproof, and even capable of submersion.

So naturally, as the crazy skeptical I am, I wanted to put it to the test. I put my $2k laptop inside the laptop sleeve, and chucked the backpack into my backyard pool.

Though I was extremely nervous about potentially losing my most valuable piece of technology, I felt reassured because of Breakwater Supply‘s track record of crowdfunding backer satisfaction. So when I removed my laptop from the backpack after its dip, I was not too surprised to find it completely dry and unscathed!

Review: What Fits in the Bag?

Then, I wanted to test out the bag on a hike. So I packed some sunglasses, tanning lotion, flip-flops, sun hat, and a speaker before I was off and ready to go.

Review: Post-Hike Impressions

The lightweight feature of the Fogland Backpack did me so well on my hike! Although I was carrying some heavy things, it did not feel like it was. I even received a compliment from a fellow hiker during my descent.

One thing to note: the side pockets can not support large thermoses (like a HydroFlask). Even my larger Aquafina water bottle had some trouble fitting into the water bottle sleeve, so I ended up putting it inside my bag. The sleeve would fit an Arrowhead or skinny Smartwater perfectly.

Pros & Cons List

Pros:

  • Airtight zippers
  • So much space!
  • Grab handles galore
  • Stylish design
  • Waterproof

Cons:

  • Water bottle side-pockets are hard to use

Who is This For?

Overall, this is the perfect backpack for the hiker who enjoys long backpacking trips. Its comfort, functionality, and aesthetic made me feel confident hiking amongst the other Arizona fitness gurus in the 110-degree heat. Because of its water resistance, this bag would be perfect for other outdoor adventures, like a tubing trip or a day at the beach.

For families with small children that love the outdoors, the backpack’s large pocket space can hold all your family’s things on a hike, while not feeling like a million pounds. Holding a backpack and a baby simultaneously can be backbreaking work; the Fogland Backpack‘s lightweight design and comfortable padding will make this way easier on parents.

And for those heading back to school after the summer season, watch this…

The Verdict

After testing it out, I can attest the Fogland Backpack is a bag that can transform the way you explore the outdoors and travel. Happy hiking and wishing you lots of memories on the water!
